Some photos from JSA conferences

Hey guys, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year! 2007 is a fresh start for our club, and I know that we as a club will work harder and better. I was flabbergasted when I found pictures of our JSA members at some of the conferences, very few attended. And I wanted to show you guys some of the photos I have found. Please check out the website where I attained these photos: http://socaljsa.ath.cx/

(Left) Notice the color, this photo was taken at USC. I was the only Bruins fan. Just kidding...
This was the regional conference where guest speakers like Dick Mountjoy spoke.

The photo below is from the Leadership Conference at SMC. This was my first time at a JSA conference. I was a bit nervous, but JSA-ers are very welcoming. I was there, and our V.P., Phoenix attended as well.

Remember guys, check this weblog often, I will post updates every two weeks.

Sincerely, Jonathan Kim

12 December 2006

Meeting Started at: 12:50 PM

Okay so first off, this is KIND OF the last meeting for the semester. BUT we do plan to meet some time during the winter break so we need your help and participation in order to send people to Congress. Some people are able to pay for themselves and donations are always appreciated even if it's only 20 dollars. It can still bring us closer to our goal of sending about 10 people to Congress. 12 People (including me) said that they would be able to help fundraise during winter break. Hopefully this is enough and we can find some new Ideas.

Jonathan gave officers and those with appointed positions the right to form committees and work together with other members to find new and interesting ways to raise money for Congress. Again, it would be really helpful if you could just help the officers out if they ask you to join their committee because it means we would be working as a team. Also, you would be contributing to the club which means you are doing something nice...Hence, you will feel all warm and cuddly inside hahaha.

Well, so far in order to reach our goal of sending 10 people to Congress we need to raise $800.00 and this goal can be reached a LOT faster if you could lend a helping hand :)

Thanks a lot to those who have helped JSA!!!

Hmm...I think that's about it for now

Ok the meeting ended at 1:07 PM.

~Cat (your JSA Secretary) Have a great week everyone!

Meeting Started at: 11:45 AM

LOL this is going to be a VERY short blog...

The conversations were very confusing (well, i couldnt HEAR because some people were talking about other things) and we didn't necessarily discuss much. Next week, we will debate on a national issue and we didnt decide on the topic. I thought we were going to do the whole "committee discussion" about local issues so now...I am confused.

But YEAH! so...do ur research for next week. :) have fun!!!

The Angeles Region of the Junior State of America presents

Saturday, October 28

University of Southern California

http://www.usc.edu/about/visit/upc/driving_directions/

The 2006 midterm elections will be among the most heated and divisive in recent memory. The results from these elections will have a tremendous impact on the course that the nation takes in the coming years. Controversial issues ranging from national security and the war in Iraq to the strength of the economy and rising gas prices are at the forefront of the voters' minds. Candidates must also offer solutions for skyrocketing health care costs, the nation's crumbling infrastructure, and a disappointingly ineffective public education system. High school students can go beyond the sound bites and have their say on these complex public policy issues in Decision 2006, presented by the Junior State of America.

Conference registration is free for all high school students and teachers. All participants may register at the door; pre-registration is not required.

For more information, please contact James Lee, Southern California Program Director, at jlee@jsa.org or Yvonne Chu, Angeles Region Mayor, at yvonne.c.chu@gmail.com.

Turkeygrams

Junior State of America

Hey everyone!

this is Vicky and i know im not an officeholder, but i just wanted to clarify the whole idea of the turkey grams. just like the santa grams that leadership does, turkey grams would include a stuffed animal (in the shape of a turkey like duh) and a card (maybe a turkey shaped one, seeing as how it IS thanskgiving) and sum candy. i just thought that this would be an easy fundraiser which would yield a lot of profits and hardly cost us anything as downtown is like MEGA cheap

thats about it

GO JSA!!!

lol

October 3/10 2006

Here are some of the ideas:
-Shakey's Pizza (participation NEEDED)
-Baja Fresh " "

Junior State of America

Hello JSA-ers,this is Jonathan Kim posting. I have attended the JSA Leadership Conference this Saturday from 9:00AM to 4:00PM. Phoenix was there as well; however, left at a bit early. It was very exciting and I have learned so much about JSA. This Tuesday, I want to speak about the Fall Convention that will be taking place in this November. It seems "America at the Crossroads" was last years event, and I received very old news.
Thirty two schools all over SoCal came and 137 students were at the Concert Hall at SMC. Apparently, Hollywood High is part of the "AR" region. I believe AR stands for Angeles Region. The SoCal governor was present, and he gave a speech. I went to a meeting where all the presidents from different high schools gathered and socialized, watched "Sometimes in April", went to a chapter leadership workshop, and attended a town hall debate where the topic was about gun rights. Politics is very exciting, and more people participating in debates makes the experience fun. Anyway, that is the brief summary of what happened this Saturday at the 2006 JSA Leadership Conference.

Hey you guys, there is a JSA Leadership Conference tomorrow September 30, 2006 at Santa Monica College. Anybody who wants to go can email me (jonathaninla@sbcglobal.net). The admission is $5 and start from 9:00 AM and ends at 4:00 PM. SMC is located at 1900 Pico Boulevard Santa Monica, CA 90405. Sorry I didn't mention about this conference last Tuesday. The reason why I didn't mention it is because I have just received this information from the headquarters on Thurdsay. I will post again tomorrow to see how things went.

Meeting Started at 11:48 AM

We wasted several minutes to get eveyrone in order *cough cough* please give Phoenix and Jonathan your undivided attention next time :P

Anywho, the Debate over the Oil Drilling in Alaska went pretty well. Jasmin started off with her arguments which were PRO drilling, and Phoenix expanded on why she is for the drilling in Alaska. I (Catherine) continued with my opinions as to why I am against the drilling (con). After I was finished I believe Jack argued for the Pro's side, and Elise argued for the cons. Andrey presented the closing speech/argument and votes were totalled, Cons won the debate.

Next week's debate will be on Capital Punishment! This time research on BOTH PROs AND CONs. Good luck with the research and have a great week!

Junior State of America

Hey this is Jonathan Kim updating OUR weblog. I want to each and one of you who attended: Adolfo Carcano, Mike Orellana, Gilbert Villa, Dustin Becerra, Oliver Mcfeely, Sylvestre Keme, Brennan Jackson, and Ms. Galvin. We raised over TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS! EXCELLENT JOB you guys. I know that each and of you put alot of effort into making our JSA yard sale a success. And I want to thank Brennan's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson for generously allowing us to use their yard so we can have our sale, TWICE! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Continue to use this weblog for any information that you want JSA members to know. Also I want to mention that we are revising our CONTACT INFO LIST. The first one is horrible because not alot of people input their home phone numbers! It was bunch of MYSPACE'S! That will not work people! PLUS WE HAVE MORE MEMBERS! Kudos to all the new members who joined (Aejin, Catherine, Gabriela Caceras, Oliver McFeely, Raj, Gilbert Villa, and Sylvestre Keme). Those are the new members who joined after our CHARTER MEMBERS. We discussed on Tuesday, June 20 that we ought to have another YARD SALE during our vacation. This time it will be more fun and exciting because EVERYONE will participate. It will be our biggest YARD SALE ever! (I really hope so)To have the biggest yard sale, WE MUST INVEST IN A CLOTHESRACK to hang our COOL CLOTHES. Clothes are the hottest thing to sell at yard sales to my knowledge. So that is all I want to say. I will see all of you guys next Tuesday. Bye! P.S.: Our debate wlll be more formal and more sophisticated from now on. We will have more frequent debates. Do not worry, it will be fun! JSA is about enhancing our debating skills, so debate we must.

Vicky, the person who asked for ten dollars was me. I believe Fedex/Kinko's charges $40 per color copy. I asked for ten dollars because I did not want to go to Fedex/Kinko's (personally) and not have enough money for the copies.

Ok people, this is Vicky

first of all, WHO THE HELL THINKS THAT 30 COPIES COST 10 DOLLARS???? Anyhow, now that I got that out of my system, here's the heads up on today's meeting

everybody except Keiry, Debbie(WHO I SAW TODAY) and Phoenix were there. We got 6, yes SIX FABULOUS new members, and although I didn't say it at the meeting, I think that we should kick out the people who don't attend, TWO of which happen to be officers. Ok, so we decided to have another fundraiser and to attend the spring convetion for 2007. Lets see, ummmmmmmm, yeah, we also assigned everybody a country to represent(well actually Ms. Galvin did) at next week's UN model. We didn't get to discuss the Lemonade Stand thing in detail. I think that's about it. yep yep

Guys, when you post, almost leave your name at the end so we know who made the post.

$10 for 30 flyers is outrageous, guys. I think we can just make them on the computers and print them straight out.

I will start a MySpace now. As long as there's one, it doesn't matter.

Guys, keep recruiting!

Things to think about...

Junior State of America

Jonathan will make the flyers for JSA, so we can start putting up flyers all around the school. How cool is that? Jonathan will make the first copy of the flyer and with approval, I will withdraw $10 from the treasury and go to Fedex/Kinko's and make at least 30 copies.

On another note, if every country gave twice (materials) and received once, wouldn't everyone be happy and live in harmony? Let us achieve peace in the world!

Junior State of America

Hey guys. so today at the meeting (only Jack, Marianna, Adolfo, Brennan, Jonathan and myself were there) we created a list of people whom we would ask to join. the model UN thingy pretty much disappeared and we decided to discuss the pending/dead garage sale at the next meeting. Our myspace has been on hold for at least three weeks although it only takes a couple of minutes to create an account. that was it.

peace!

Brenan and I will represent Great Britain. As for the rest of you, decide and post your nations here preferably by Friday.

Katie, I still need to get that money to borrow the JSA tapes from the headquarter, so let me know when you can do that.

And lastly, is our MySpace up yet? It's been three weeks, so I'm just curious.

Thanks,
Jack

Junior State of America

Hey guys, this is Vicky again.

Okay, today was one of the best meetings we have ever had. First of all, everyone was there, YAY!!! We didn't make any decisions on our frozen garage sale proposition thingy, but we did have a fabulous, though rushed debate on proposition HR4437. For the next meeting, we sort of decided on having a model United Nations, but nothing is final, Jack or I will call everybody to make the model UN final.

well, that's about it.

Peace!

Junior State of America

Hey everyone, again, here are the minutes for todays minutes.

First of all, only Mike, Jack, Jonathan, Brennan, Phoenix, Andrey, Mariana,Dustin, and myself attended todays meeting. Shame on you Adolfo, Keiry and Debbie for not attending. The Vicky-Keiry Compromise was passed and it states the following:
-Only if absent from school, or some other excusable reason will be pardoned for not attending a meeting.
-If absent, you will present the club with an argument to try to convince us that you had no choice but to be absent. We will then decide if your reason is valid or not.
-Apart from paying the missed meeting's dues, anyone absent will also have to pay a 1 dollar fine, in addition to the current meeting's dues. So, if you missed this meeting, at the next meeting, you will have to pay 3 dollars, and so on.

We passed the Vicky-Keiry Compromise and accepted Mariana as a new member. Everyone except for Dustin and Jonathan paid their dues, but they will pay at the next meeting. We also agreed to rent the JSA Convention videos using $15 from our treasury. Phoenix deposited our money into the school account and gave Ms. Galvin a copy of the reciept. We took the picture for the blog and yearbook. We did not discuss the fundraiser and hope to do so at the next meeting.

The topic for the next meeting's debate is immigration. Please read the rule-book and do some research to make the debate good.

That was basically all.

I apologize for not mentioning who wrote the bottom statement. The statement was brought to you by the Secretary of Debate, Jonathan Kim.

Junior State of AmericaI apologize for not mentioning who I was in the bottom statement. It is I, Jonathan Kim (Secretary of Debate)

Junior State of America

Junior State of AmericaVicky is right. The Keiry-Vicky Compromise has been approved by the majority of our members. We will begin pursuing a progressive agenda and fines for being absent. Please consider JSA as your priority. If you do not care about JSA, who will? Hollywood High's JSA was founded by students, governed by students, and therefore it should have the most support from the students.

Junior State of America

Hello everyone, this is Vicky,

As promised, here are the minutes for Tuesday March 21, 2006

Okay, first thing, shame on A LOT of people, only half of the members attended (and the CAHSEE is NOT a good excuse)
Second, Keiry's argument and mine were fit into a compromise stating that at the next meeting, when everyone attends (I have to call you all absenties on Monday night) that we would vote on a tardy and absent punishment. We, as responsible scholars have to prioritize and decide if lunch is more important than the JSA. So, be ready to vote and prepare your arguments.
Last of all, we decided that we could not vote on any important matter, such as the pending garage sale, until majority of members attend.

-Vicky (aka the Secretary)
